When to fish for Gray Triggerfish — primary and peak months.
Recommended tackle and gear for targeting Gray Triggerfish.
The Gulf recreational season runs March 1 - May 31 and August 1 - December 31, 2026 - it reopens August 1 after the summer closure. Florida Gulf state waters and federal waters follow the same windows, so charters and private boats fish the same calendar.
One per person, with a 15-inch fork length minimum. Your captain will confirm current limits on the day of your trip - regulations can change mid-season.
Among the best on the reef - firm, white, sweet fillets that many Gulf regulars rank ahead of snapper. Part of why the season gets so much attention despite the one-fish limit.
Yes - catch and release. Triggerfish live on Destin's reefs and wrecks year-round and are a constant (bait-stealing) presence on bottom trips even when harvest is closed. Everything goes back until the season reopens.
Triggerfish come from the same reefs and wrecks as the rest of the bottom bag: vermilion snapper year-round, red snapper when its season is open, and porgies and grunts in the mix. From August 1 the fall reef stack starts building - triggerfish is the opener.
The August 1 reopening and the fall months fish well without peak-summer crowds - a week or two ahead is usually enough, though weekends still go first.
